The first ever Greenbuild Expo took place on 17th and 18th June 2009 at Manchester Central. The exhibition and conference was a great success, with around 1600 visitors taking part in over 75 seminars and debates covering a variety of different areas of sustainability.
Highlights included sessions on renewable energy, with an incredible take up for the seminars on solar PV, solar heating, wind generation, heat pumps and biomass. Green refurbishment was also tremendously popular, with standing room only in the seminar area, as was the Code for Sustainable Homes, legislation (particularly Parts L & F) and BREEAM sessions for commercial buildings.

Other popular attractions were the Workshops, which saw over 700 people take part in practical, hands-on sessions on solar PV, rainwater harvesting, grey water recycling, air source heat pumps, green roofing, ground source heat pumps and smart metering.
Visitors
The audience for Greenbuild Expo 2009 consisted of a mixture from the private sector (47%) public sector (37%) and commercial (18%), with quality at a very high standard: 95% of visitors were either directors, owners, partners, managers or consultants.
Visitor feedback has been excellent with many requests for more information on the topics covered at the show. Feedback from visitors showed that the majority are looking at solutions that not only result in a more sustainable solution but also for better efficiencies in running costs for the future.
Exhibitors
Exhibitor feedback has also been very positive, here’s just a small selection of the comments we have received:
“Greenbuild Expo was a really vibrant show with a great mix of people. It was great to see so many sustainable products and service providers under one roof. We've had a lot of good quality enquiries from the right kind of visitor. ”
Anna Cooper, Green Roofs Today
“We were very pleased to be associated with the first Greenbuild Expo and encouraged by the quality of audience that the organisers delivered. SIG gave two seminars during the Expo and both were well attended by knowledgeable delegates who contributed to a lively debate and exchange of ideas. Hamerville are to be congratulated on providing a platform for manufacturers and service providers to meet with potential customers who have sustainable building at the core of their specification agenda.”
Stuart Base, SIG Roofing
“Greenbuild Expo was hugely successful for us. Not only did we have a large number of visitors to our stand, they were exactly the people we wished to speak with, for example local authority specifiers, housing associations, developers and contractors, heating and ventilation companies, architects, energy specialists and environmental consultancies. There was tremendous interest in our workshop explaining how our two systems work, either independently of one another or in a combined manner to deliver larger savings and I am confident that the large number of leads we picked up will bear fruit.”
