  • Cembrit
    A5

Natural slate became “the” roof covering in Britain during the industrial revolution because quarrying and splitting into the finished article required minimal processing. Man – horse, - barge and low impact steam power was used to create and transport finished slate efficiently over long distance, hence the ubiquity of natural slate roofs throughout the British Isles.
Whilst overburden is nowadays removed by mechanical diggers and road and sea haulage is used to move slates to market, roofing slate is still largely hand produced requiring a fraction of the energy input of processed alternatives such as concrete or clay. Emissions are little different than in the age of steam.
Natural slate is recognised to have the longest useable life of any roof covering, furthermore it is standard practise to re-use natural slate. The best quality natural slate can be expected to last centuries when re-use is considered. Other roof coverings, if they are recycled at all, are likely to be reprocessed as hard core.
Once an area of quarry is exhausted the land is re-filled and landscaped as a matter of course. As natural slate is extracted rather than processed there is no need for decontamination. Finished quarries are some of our best preserved landscapes.
